New Commission – Michele Melillo in Sweden

In Michele Melillo’s „Nils Holgersson,“ the artist employs acrylic and acrylic pencil on traditional Swedish timber to pay homage to Selma Lagerlöf’s beloved narrative. „Nils Holgersson“ a pivotal character in Swedish literature. The story is not just a children’s tale; it’s a cultural treasure that educates about Swedish geography, traditions, and values. It reflects a connection to Sweden’s literary history and its global influence, as Lagerlöf was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Melillo’s depiction is far from a simple retelling. With bold, jagged lines and a palette of brilliant hues, he infuses the piece with a vibrancy that mirrors the unbridled freedom of Nils‘ adventures. The goose Akka, rendered in metallic purple with an exaggeratedly large head, carries Nils, whose arms reach towards the sky in a gesture of liberation and ecstasy. The artist’s choice of materials underscore the narrative, propelling the viewer into a state of heightened emotional engagement.

Two works connecting Swedish Tradition and Pop Culture

In the second image Melillo places familiar figures from Swedish culture in a viking boat painted like a Dala Horse. The fairy-like elf with flowers adorning her hair and a face like a rococo figurine returns the gaze of the viewer. The troll in the middle looks amused and almost in love with his fellow passenger. The childlike character at the other end of the boat is reminiscent of Michele’s childhood drawings which he uses for reference in his search for motives and has become a trademark.

Melillo’s interpretation goes beyond representation; serving as a bridge connecting the realms of classical iconography and contemporary pop culture. The familiar becomes novel, inviting the viewer into a deeper engagement with the work. This dichotomy of recognition and disruption plays out across the canvas. Melillo cleverly parallels modern music’s synthesis of familiar melodies with discordant, innovative notes, crafting a visual symphony that resonates with the energy and zest for life emblematic of Swedish culture symbols. Michele Melillo reimagines the classic tales, inviting us to perceive the world anew, with eyes wide open to the wonder of discovery and the boundless possibilities of imagination.
